What makes it great
How Not Your Grandma’s Checkers Was Born
After creating our first game in the Not Your Grandma’s series (Go Fish) a few weeks earlier, we set off to create another fun twist on a classic – Checkers. My 10-year-old son had long-loved playing checkers. Being a competitive kid, he told me that if his sister could help create the best Go Fish Game in the history of the world (which became our first game – Not Your Grandma’s Go Fish) he could easily help create the best twist on Checkers the universe had ever seen.
So with nothing more than some card stock paper which we cut into squares with a cheap paper cutter, we set out to design a game of checkers that you could build yourself as you played. For as simple of game as checkers is, creating a “build your own” checkers board was no small task. That boy must have played 50 games before things started to get ironed out. Plus, he got some great suggestions and direction from his mother and friends from Utah. Before long, we could not put the game down. In the end, he believes his Not Your Grandma’s Checkers game is even better than his sister’s creation of Not Your Grandma’s Go Fish. We’ll let you decide.
